The Pantheon Restoration Works About to Begin

Dispatch from Paris | Published : 30/Jan/2013 19:10

The Panthéon
The city of Paris is about to begin a multi-year renovation of one of its most cherished landmarks: the 82-meter-high Panthéon, which is visible from much of Paris, will be receiving a thorough, decade-long face-lift [1] [2].

The works will be organized in three stages, of which the first, with a focus on the building's dome and its tambour, will last about two years. Subsequent stages will gradually move from the top of the building toward the bottom, the interior, and, finally, the exterior spaces.

The final stage will likely start in 2022 and finish some time in the mid-2020s. The Panthéon will remain open during the restoration works (which, given the monument's popularity -- 752,000 visitors in 2012 -- seems like a sensible strategy).
