Profile

Founded in 1860, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal) shows the work of Canadian and international artists. It is Montreal's largest museum.

Architectural Notes

The museum operates in several pavillions. One of them (1379 Sherbrooke Street) is housed in a 1912 Beaux Arts building by William Sutherland Maxwell. Another one (the Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion), across rue Sherbrooke, was designed by Moshe Safdie and built in 1991. The Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion has the principal entrance. Visitors can access the 1912 pavilion via an underground passage.
