Glühwein in the Crisp Air
Posted by Andrea in Austria on 16/Nov/2007
Winter travel is popular for people looking to escape winter, or for those in search of a ski resort, but rarely do people travel to winter for the sake of winter itself. Coats, boots, scarves and mitts are cumbersome to carry, another suitcase in and of themselves. Besides the clinical advantages of off-season prices and less tourists to contend with, what could be interesting about travelling in winter, if not for sport, that couldn’t be done with less baggage in another season?
Glühwein, mulled wine. Now, does it sound more interesting?

Speaking as a mexican, winter destinations always used to be a must! (Now I am changing my opinion) Snow and cold were so far from our daily reality that we really wanted to experience them.

So what, they just drink it on the street?
P.S. May be I am a little obsessed with the topic now, but is it legal?

Yup, it's legal. Basically everywhere else other than Canada and the US know when to take a flexible/contextual approach to 'illegality', but that's our puritanical heritage/baggage coming out.
That said, after reading the comments posted I think we're missing the real point of confluence here: as Irazema pointed out, winter in Montreal can drain you of any desire for it at all. It's enjoyable, even novel, up until January, but February, March and the wildcat snow storm just before Easter can really drive you to drink! It does me, and I'm a semi-native.
Glühwein should be available in the streets of Montreal, just to get us through to the mucky spring!

the truth is that at some point in Montreal you don't even want to be outside and I am sure you can walk around with Gluewine(just kidding,Gluhwein) mug .I think that as long as you dont walk around with a beer/wine/wiskey/etc bottle you should be fine. They don't breathealize (is this even a word?) you walking on street /However ,drinking and driving in the winter in Montreal might be a little dangerous ...otherwise ,gluhwein bring it on!!
