Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd, has died:

Syd, who suffered a nervous breakdown (let's just call it that) very early in band's history - effectively right after the first album came out in 1967, was forced to leave the band, and after a few unsuccessful attempts at reviving his musical career in 1969/1970 essentially locked himself up in his mother's home for more than 35 years, refusing to give interviews or even much talk to anyone. There were rumours he went back to painting (his original passion), but as far as I know, nothing was ever produced.
Barrett was an inspiration not only for Pink Floyd members themselves who dedicated an album to him in 1975 ("Wish Your Were Here"), but also for countless other musicians.
Barrett was 60.
P.S. Apparently, he died a few days ago, although the spokesman only confirmed it today (Tuesday). WikiPedia lists the date as "July, 7th".
