Oh, I didn't realise that needed explanation. The gardens are a big attraction for tourists in Japan. They have been copied, commodified and made ubiquitous in pseudo-buddhist West Coast culture. There are now little 'desktop' gardens that come with a trayful of gravel and a little rake.
