Re: Waldorf=Astoria Hotel Comes To Chicago

Waldorf=Astoria Hotel Comes To Chicago
Posted by Gromco in Chicago on 25/Nov/2008

The Waldorf=Astoria brand seems to be on a roll, financial crisis be damned. It was only a few months ago that we announced the planned Waldorf=Astoria hotel in Montreal and now we're adding Chicago to the list of lucky cities.

The hotel tower, designed by DeStefano & Partners is projected to reach 1,100 feet (that's over 100 floors!), but unlike certain other landmarks planned for Chicago, it will not surpass the height of the Sears Tower...

(article) The American Dime Museum

The American Dime Museum
Posted by Keith in Baltimore; Places To Visit on 17/Mar/2007

Dime Museum We were in the greater Baltimore area to visit the American Dime Museum, an example of and homage to the old dime museums and sideshow displays that were a staple of traveling carnivals and circuses during the late 19th and early 20th century. For a mere dime, dupes and rubes could file through a museum of the strange and curious and marvel at everything from a two-headed calf to a mermaid from Fiji...

Being in the art field, I wouldn't normally think of Denver as a leading art center. But thanks to their new museum, they've secured themselves on the art world map...

(article) ¡Viva Lucha Libre!

¡Viva Lucha Libre!
Posted by Noelia in Texas; Things To See on 15/Feb/2007

Lucha Libre In a brutal dance of acrobatics and fierce headlocks, the wrestlers tumbled and flipped each other across the ring, stopping now and then to turn to the cheering audience and flex their muscles. They ranged in age and size from youthful bodybuilders to small but quick, middle-aged firecrackers, and all wore shiny face masks and colorful spandex pants that sparkled under the outdoor lights. The commentator kept up with all the action, dramatically rattling off the moves in Spanish over blaring loudspeakers. The referee bounced around the men in the ring, fielding insults from hecklers in the audience...

This is Lucha Libre, or Mexican wrestling – a mixture of sport, drama, comedy and sheer showmanship...

(article) Indian Springs Resort

Indian Springs Resort
Posted by Lori in Denver; Things To Do on 14/Mar/2007

About 32 miles from Denver sits a tiny hippy oasis called Indian Springs Resort. Mud baths! Mineral Springs! "Private jacuzzis with beautiful mountain view!" This sounded like the makings of a relaxing vacation!

When we arrived at Indian Springs, my first impression was "this is it?"...

[Article] Body Worlds 2

Body Worlds 2
Posted by Ree in Boston; Arts & Events on 21/Nov/2006

The title makes it sound as though you are about to view some B-movie about a perverted Dr. Frankenstein who gives life to zombies on other planets, but in actuality it was named by a German scientist who pioneered the process of plastination, which essentially means turning corpses and body parts into something more permanent. So basically, not too far off from my initial impression.

This exhibition at the museum of science in Boston is not something i would have gone to a few years ago. I've never had a strong stomach and I am a sympathetic barfer. I even threw up at the alter during my own wedding! In recent years I've toughened up, to the point where I can clean up after the dog, bandage a wound, and scare away wild animals (well, at least the odd moth or two). And so I thought I was ready for Body Worlds...

[Article] Mount Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway

Mount Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway
Posted by Keith in North Carolina; Nature on 11/Nov/2006

After spending days lounging around in the sun and surfing on deserted beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks (OBX if you're nasty), it was time for a change. Luckily, NC is a state that allows you to go from one extreme to the other pretty easily, so long as you manage, unlike me, not to get lost in Dismal Swamp. From the flat expanses of the Outer Banks, and without only a brief pit stop dedicated to the aforementioned getting lost (extended somewhat by the fact that I got caught in the middle of a massive frog migration, which is weird enough on its own and made a whole lot weirder by the fact that this is actually the second time I've been halted in my vehicle by a massive frog migration), I shot due west and straight into the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains to meet up with an old friend and put a feather in my knit cap by hiking the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi: 6,648 foot tall Mount Mitchell.

It was also a grand chance to make one of the most beautiful drives in all of the Americas: the Blue Ridge Parkway in autumn...
