Although there are many fine restaurants in the 6th,
most people (somewhat nostalgically, perhaps) associate this district with cafés
like Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots ( 6 place Saint Germain des Prés) - former hangouts
of writers and intellectuals now largely overtaken by tourists and
bourgeois.
Boulevard Montparnasse establishments fared better, although
they, too, clearly play the history card:
La Rotonde, for example, uses
table napkins covered with the names of its famous former patrons.
The following are the restaurants in 6th Arrondissement that we profiled:
- Alcazar
62 rue Mazarine (6th Arrondissement), +33 (0)1 53 10 19 99 A modern international restaurant attracting
both Parisian and international clientèle.
- Café de Flore
172 bd. St-Germain (6th Arrondissement), +33 (0)1 45 48 55 26 A former hangout of artists and intellectuals like
Sartre, Camus and Picasso, this café has suffered
the inevitable fate of any other establishment that
ends up being mentioned in every guidebook: it was
practically taken over by tourists. One can hardly blame
the managers for increasing their prices (a coffee will set you
back about 5€), but at least they persist in
keeping the Art Deco décor the way it was.
- La Rotonde
105 bd. Montparnasse (6th Arrondissement), +33 (0)1 43 26 48 26 A century-old café with a classic decor. Famous for being the hangout
of more than a dozen artists and intellectuals of the early 20th century.
