Midtown Manhattan Restaurants
The following are the restaurants in Midtown Manhattan that we profiled:
- Comfort Diner
214 East 45th Street (Midtown Manhattan), (212) 867-4555 - Craft
43 East 19th Street (Midtown Manhattan), (212) 780-0880
Build your own meal from a selection of ingredients. For each of the courses, the menu is split into several major categories (meat, salads, fish & shellfish, etc) and armed with a list of side dishes (mushrooms, potatoes, grains, etc) you do all the combining. Very simple indeed: the more you put on your plate, the more it will cost you. Reservations highly recommended. - L'Express
249 Park Ave South (Midtown Manhattan), (212) 254-5858
A 24-hour 'Lyonnaise-style' brasserie - Mandoo Bar
2 West 32nd Street (Midtown Manhattan)
Mandoo (the specialty, as you might surmise from the name) are, basically, dumplings and there are many type thereof on the menu (meat, seafood, vegetable, etc). If you're not sure which one you'll like best, order a mixed mandoo dish. Other goodies include soups, salads and Korean crépes dripping in fat. Lots of Koreans eat here, so it's not a tourist trap.Kimchi is a fermented vegetable dish and muwu is a pickled radish dish. Both are basic side dishes at Mandoo.
- Nha Trang (Original)
87 Baxter St (Midtown Manhattan) - Uncle Vanya
315 West 54th St (Midtown Manhattan), (212) 262-0542
Affordable and informal Russian restaurant. If you're afraid of trying another Russian restaurant for fear of being immersed in Brighton-Beach-style tackiness, fear not: Uncle Vanya is a different bird. Much more "St.Petersburg" than "Odessa", this is the place where many a Russian goes to eat actual Russian food. Try pelmeni accompanied by flavored vodka (my choice, albeit an unusual one, is the horseradish flavor) and be sure to get tea with preserves at the end of your meal - there's not going to be any of that teabag silliness - you'll get a full pot of real, loose tea (more than enough for two or even three).
