Postcard from New York: Street Art

Posted by Slavito in New York on 25/Jul/2003

One of the things I like about walking around Manhattan is that you can find strange art pieces all over. You just have to pay attention and keep asking yourself - should this thing be there?

Well, everybody knows Andre the Giant, but I am not talking about artifacts that banal. The guy scribbling "no more prisons" all over the country is hardly any better. But one dude, for instance, pattern-prints bizzare creatures on the sidewalk - the one I particularly loved was a re-make of the "I (heart) NY" sign. He made it into "I (scary squirming heart-shaped bug-resembling creature) NY". Unfortunately, I never have my camera when I see something really good.

But this one is not so bad either. I started noticing these rusty metal critters mounted on parking advisory posts only recently, but what amazes me is that unlike printed pattern, such things are actually real and I imagine, difficult to make. The dedication of the artist making them can only be compared to my own in writing for this web site.

Anyway, now you know what to look for.
