Architectonic Wonder in Colombian Jungle | ||||||
Nice Places |
But as it turns out, the place really exists; not only that, this (real) photo actually captures one of the best views the Municipality of Ipiales (Nariño Province, Colombia) has to offer. The imposing structure on the other side of the bridge, framed by a natural green arcade, is the "National Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de las Lajas" - a Gothic-style church created in 1915 by the Ecuadorian engineer Gualberto Pérez. Completely embedded in the mountain, this massive structure rests on three poles and rises above the stream of Río Guaitar. The main atrium plays the role of a bridge and at the same time forms the base of the column (which is why the whole thing is often called "the miracle over the abyss"). Those planning a journey through Colombia should consider a side trip to Ipiales in order to discover this architectonic wonder set amid the country's most beautiful and colorful scenery.
