Skiing in Vermont

Nice Places

Irazema Skiing

A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I decided to take a weekend skiing trip to Vermont. I'd always wanted to learn to how to ski but had absolutely no skills, being Mexican and all.

Complicating the situation was the fact that three years ago my boyfriend went through an unpleasant experience of getting buried in an avalance while skiing in the high mountains - fortunately, he survived the accident (otherwise, I wouldn't be dating him!), but unfortunately he had to go though numerous operations and until last March was only able to walk aided by a pair of crutches or a cane.

So, erring on the side of caution, we decided to do cross-country skiing. The plain surface was really my best bet, too, as I could be calm, in contact with nature, but not too far from all the earthly conveniences (after skiing for half an hour we stopped in the middle of the forest to have a cup of hot chocolate and watch the night fall).

Ski Fall At some point I will undoubtedly try downhill skiing as well, but for now cross-country will serve just fine as my self-mandated introduction to the world of winter sports. I'll have time to adjust now that I live in Montreal more or less permanently.

As for the resort itself, we were looking for a last minute special deal and that's just what we found at the Bolton Valley resort. The deal, valued at $89 even included breakfast, albeit the continental variety.

On the positive side, we enjoyed the complimentary degustation of wines and cheeses, the relative merits of our room and the available restaurants, as well as the fact that there was a jacuzzi and a sauna (perfect after a hard day of skiing). The negative side included the terrible noise emanating from the downhill skiers' slopes (apparently they were making artificial snow there: fine by us, but we could hardly feel relaxed with our room facing those damn slopes), the separate charges for the ski lift and, finally, the fact that despite not ever being given the firm check-out hour, the management tried charging us $25 for allegedly overstaying our welcome by 20 minutes. But those were little details, after all, and they didn't spoil our impressions of Vermont as a skiing destination. I definitely recommend it.
