Co-directed by Robert Cantarella and Frédéric Fisbach, the center, located at 104 rue d’Aubervilliers, was green-lighted by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë in 2005. More than two years and 100 million euro later, Centquatre opened to the public in October.
The 39 000 m² space is decidedly multi-purpose and multi-disciplinary: in addition to works of visual arts, Centquatre will host film screenings, installations as well as house production facilities in a variety of art disciplines. About 200 artists-in-residence will make it home each year and the center is supposed to provide financial and logistical support to many more.104
