Founded in 1860, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal) shows the work of Canadian and international artists. It is Montreal’s largest museum.
The MMFA operates in several pavillions, one of which (at 1379 Sherbrooke Street) is housed in a 1912 Beaux Arts building by William Sutherland Maxwell. Another museum building (the Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion, in which the principal entrance is located), across Rue Sherbrooke, was designed by Moshe Safdie and built in 1991. Visitors can access the 1912 pavilion via an underground passage.
