Row Your Boat Gently Across Central Park
Posted by Lori in New York; Nature; Sports on 26/Sep/2006

Sometimes being a tourist in my own city is my favorite thing to do. It gives me a fresh perspective on the city I love, and the break from my routine (subway, homework, class, subway, homework, class) inspires me to explore my terrain even further.

Typically, I associate most goings on in Central Park with tacky tourists, but who's to say I myself am not tacky?! It was with great gusto and old New York romantic notions that I rented a row boat with my friends on the Lake in Central Park.

There's a French expression summing up this lifestyle - you may have heard it in Paris: métro - boulot - dodo (subway - work - sleep).

On an especially nice day, rowing the Central Park lake is sort fo liek running an obstacle course. there are so many boats full of so many people going around in circles or just careening about (or as close to careening as you can get in a rowboat). It's sort of like the chariot race from Ben Hur.

As for the routine -- I constantly have to remind myself that there's no point in living in New York if all I do is go to work, then ride the subway home and watch TV. I could do that in any city and pay a lot less rent.

Well, mostly I REMIND myself. i don't actually do anyting about it -- as last night's dinner of Hot Pockets and champagne can attest.
