Just like the neighboring 10th Arrondissement, the 11th district of Paris used to be populated by the capital's working-class. It is less so nowadays.
Hotels
Not as popular with tourists as the districts to the west and the south, the 11th Arrondissement could be a good choice if you want to stay reasonably close to Gare de Lyon (which could be your gateway point for the South of France), yet within an easy reach of most Parisian landmarks (reachable by Metro Line 1).
Keep in mind, however, that this district has quite a bit of traffic.
