Born in Tunisia (a French colony at the time) in 1950, Delanoë was first elected to the Paris City Council in 1977 (Jacques Chirac became the mayor that year). In March 2001, Delanoë was elected mayor of Paris. Re-elected in March 2008, he was succeeded in his post in 2014 by Anne Hidalgo.
