District Profile

The third arrondissement came into being in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the city started expanding north from the Île de la Cité. It contains many of Paris’s oldest buildings.

Much of the district comprises the neighborhood called Le Marais (which also extends to the 4th arrondissement) is quite popular with Paris’s hipsters (and the city’s gay community).

The third arrondissement houses many important cultural centers such as the Musée Picasso and the Musée Carnavalet, as well as several contemporary art galleries.
